Understanding Manager Dashboard and Learning Groups permissions

D2L recommends careful consideration of which roles and permissions are appropriate for your users.

Manager Dashboard permissions

  • The Manager Dashboard > Manage Direct Reports permission is required for all users who want to see the Manager Dashboard tool. This permission is recommended for the People Manager role.
  • The Users > Enroll 'End User' permission is required for Manager roles to assign courses to and from users in Manager Dashboard. Without this permission, Managers can only view course assignments, user progress through courses, due dates and overdue course alerts in Manager Dashboard.

Permissions for administrators and other users of Learning Groups

  • The Learning Groups > Allows user to create groups of courses and assign learners based on attributes permission is required for users to see the Learning Groups tool, as well as create learning groups and assign users and courses to learning groups manually or automatically.
  • The Users > See the User Management Tool permission is required for all users who require access to administer the Learning Groups or Attributes tools. This permission is recommended for the role of Administrator.

Note: There is a Group Administration admin tool that is used by site administrators to assign and remove Administrators, and to delete Learning Groups. This tool is useful in the case of one group administrator being removed from the system, leaving the group without an assigned administrator. Note that the ability to administer the Learning Groups tool is different than being designated as an administrator of a specific Learning Group.

  • The Manage Completion Tracking permission is required to enable course completion tracking for courses in Brightspace. This course completion data is reported in Manager Dashboard. This permission is recommended for anyone whose role is to create and configure course content, such as instructors and course designers.
